Most of our trainees are recommended to us by churches or friends. We do not advertise or accept random applications. During the training we observe closely and frequently interact with the trainees. Our training and evaluations have undergone a number of changes. The first two time we did training we gave out stars (five stars meant "excellent" and one star "poor"). The star system was too subjective and sometimes misleading, so we have gone to a scoring system which measures 10 categories we believe are important to our HK customers.
Here are the things we include in our evaluation of trainees:
- Diligence
- Carefulness
- Initiative
- Hygiene
- Emotional Strength
- Infant Care
- Cooking (Chinese)
- Housework
- Humility
- English
We now score on a 1-10 scale with a maximum total of 100.
No system of evaluation is perfect, and we sometimes misjudge a helper's ability. We try our best to be objective and fair, but I am sure that we sometimes miss the mark.
