How to Handle Stress
Scripture: Philippians 4:4-7
Always be glad because of the Lord! I will say it again: Be glad. Always be gentle with others. The Lord will soon be here. Don't worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.
Lesson: Dealing with Stress
2 Minute Drill: One word call out: One by one, name one thing that gives you stress. Don’t repeat something shared by another member already.
Study the illustration below. Recall a recent stressful event. How did you manage your stress?
Coping with Stress
Eat healthy - too much coffee & sweets increases energy but may cause a sudden drop of energy.
Exercise before working. Do deep breathing.
Read God’s message for you from His Word & pray.
Know and Do what renews you. (depende sa personality):
physical exercise
talk to someone, cry
sleep, cry, sing, cook, eat, chat
read, write, time alone
Fight, Flight or Faith
Fight and Flight are NOT our only options. Followers of Jesus expect to encounter trouble and even persecution. God has a secret formula for dealing with stress: Faith!
If we trust God then we know that He is in charge and is working "all things together for the good of those who love him" (Ro. 8:28)
Because God is in control, we are free to live lives full of gratitude. Anxiety and stress do not make themselves at home in the life of a person who is filled with gratitude. Thankfulness and worry cannot co-exist. Read again the Phil. 4:4-7 (our devotion). Circle the verbs. What are we commanded to do and not do? How might each of these actions help to relieve stress in our lives? Notice the words "always" and "everything". Why are they important? What does God promise?
Complete the following sentence:
"The next time I feel stressed out, I will try ____________ to cope with my stress.
Prayer Focus
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for my employer! Thank you for the problems I am facing right now. I don't understand what you are doing, but I trust you to watch over and protect me. Thank you that you love me and work everything for the good of those who love you. Amen
